2023: Notre Programme D'Etudes Bilingue - 3 ans -
We have a Weekly Theme, like numbers or colors. So everyday we try to:
- Read whatever BOOKS go with the theme. We really like T'Choupi!
- Practice our new vocabulary by playing with TOYS
- Listen to a THEME SONG from Spotify
- Watch a short episode of a MUSIC SHOW like Mini Lanuages or Mimi
- Watch the same short episode of a LANGUAGE LEARNING SHOW like Little Pim
- For a reward, we watch a longer LANGUAGE LEARNING SHOW like Whistlefritz
(What isn't featured yet is audiobooks or worksheets since Jubilee is still too young for those).
BOOKS: Sometimes I’m able to line them up with the week’s theme but sometimes not. I find if I wait until everything matches the theme or lines up perfectly then we won’t make progress so I’ve had to loosen up a little (which is saying something for this Type-A personality!). Since we're still growing our French library, if I don't have a book that fits the theme I just speak French with an English board book.
SONGS: To prep for each week I hit our Spotify account. I usually pick 4-5 though we rarely listen to that many at once (but I keep them in a playlist for when we return to that theme when she is older). So, we end up with 1 song Jubilee really likes that we use as the week’s theme song. And that’s fine because at her age she loves the repetition and she needs it too. But that repetition reminds me of an important rule: I only include songs that won’t drive me crazy! If I don’t like the music or annoying kid voice or something, then I don’t include it.
SHOWS: Because she is only 3 we still don’t let Jubilee watch much on screens but when we do it is usually in French. So, used in moderation the final part of our curriculum is LANGUAGE LEARNING SHOWS. There are actually a few geared towards toddlers that are quickly becoming favorites in our house (Whistlefritz, Little Pim, Mimi's and Mini Languages – I’m looking at you!).
So, there you have it. Books, Toys, Songs, Music & Language Learning Shows: a basic bilingual toddler curriculum!
