Learning French with "Picture Talks"

Picture Talks

One of the Proficiency activities I learned about from La Libre Language Learning is Picture Talks. She emphasizes making small daily progress and while a lot of her recommended games were for a classroom or older kids I realized that Picture Talk was a proficiency activity I could try right away.

So today I did a simple one with my 4 year old Jubilee. A traditional Picture Talk features wildly interesting pictures that you use to get students talking. But for this version I decided to use pictures of my daughter since she already loves looking at pictures of herself. Last night I chose 25 recent pictures of her and our family.

Today we went through Jubilee's pictures with me asking questions, all in French, about who it was or what they were doing or what color something was. I was looking for basic, one-word French answers and that is mostly what I got. I was impressed that we were able to do this for about 10 minutes, which is a good time frame for her limited attention span.
This picture was great because I asked where each color cup is and she named the body part. Because it was a picture of her, she laughed the whole time!
