Practical & Comprehensible 5: Conference Take-Aways

I wasn't sure how the P&C5 Conference would be as it is designed for World Language Classroom Teachers and I'm a homeschool mom. But since it was free I decided to give it a try and I'm so glad I did. It was totally worth it! My biggest benefit was learning about using AI to generate resources (I plan to do more posts about that in the future).

The conference is over but you can buy a pass to watch all the recorded sessions or sign-up for the waitlist for the 2025 conference hereBut for now I'll share my take-aways with you...

BIGGEST BENEFIT

  • Use AI to “Work Smarter, Not Harder”
  • Diffit - all she had to say was “Memorial Day in Spanish for 2nd grade” and it gave article with picture and comprehension questions
  • AI: chatGPT, stable diffusion or crayion.com for images, Gamma to create presentations, Suno to create songs, Quizalize for games/quizzes, Vizard for video transcriptions and more...

INSIGHTS TO SHARE

  • “Jason Fried: “Workaholics are heroes. They don’t save the day. They just use it up. The heroes are home because they figured out a faster way.”
  • Teach what YOU are excited about
  • Teacher as Curator (i.e. find great resources)

ACTIVITIES TO TRY

  • CI Novels Written to consider word count & proficiency level
  • Students come up with 2 Truths & a Lie from whatever content & fix the false ones (ex. Phrases from a chapter of book you’re reading)
  • Graphic Organizer: give 3 facts per Super 7 verb
  • Assessment/Writing Cycle: students draft, you circle correctable errors, they fix mistakes, make a final copy
  • Running Dictation – person 1 runs to memorize phrases from different locations, person 2 writes/draws them, together they put them in order
  • Virtual Field Trip via Google Arts & Culture website
  • Hexagonal Thinking - awesome blog post with ideas here

PRACTICAL IDEAS

  • Let students be involved in goal setting for their own language learning
  • (In student interactions) When in doubt, use question words; use either/or often
  • Use a “Chat Mat” or “Word Bank” to help students succeed
  • You can expand any activity with Review, Predict, & Compare
  • Repetition is key: using the same structure 8-10 times is more effective than teaching something once then asking them to write about it
  • Students often don’t need more vocab they need more verbs, connectors, & prepositions i.e. input so they can form phrases
  • When teaching Subjunctive don’t try to explain all its uses at once but when it is useful ex. if doing an Art Unit use it to express emotions
  • Identify your teaching priorities and only consume resources relevant to that
