Glutton-Free: Cultivating a Theology of Enough
Part 24: Common Objections
"But My Kids Are Picky!"
“We have hooked our kids on foods that lead them to an early grave. A common argument is: ‘But my kids won’t eat that.’ Duh! Of course they won’t eat healthy foods if we keep reinforcing their addictions to sugar, fat and salt. … Part of winning the food fight is dictating nutritional choices.” (Willits Loc. 1373)
“But Veggies are Yucky!”
I agree with Pastor Rick Warren: “Our theory about vegetables is this: if you hate them, you’ve never had them prepared properly. They were canned, overcooked, boiled, deep-fried, or highly processed and tasteless mush” (Warren. 444).
“Do they have to be Organic?”
Organic produce benefits from better nutrients in the soil. It is closer to how God designed it and tastes better too. However, organic food is more expensive and not as available. It may surprise you that the answer is actually no:
“Even if certain nonorganic fruits and vegetables are contaminated by pesticides, the positive impact of anticancer molecules wins out over the negative effect of carcinogens.” (Servan-Schreiber, Loc 2447. Emphasis his).
You should still buy organic when you can, but do not avoid fruits or vegetables when you cannot.
“Doesn’t God give people Freedom to Eat Meat?”
It was not until after the flood that God even allowed people to eat meat. Even then meat was not central to the Israelites’ diet, but eaten sparingly or for special feast days.
“I’ve been Eating Poorly for so long it’s Too Late for me!”
Dr. McDougall reports, “What we choose to eat determines the predominance of the bacteria species that will live in our gut. By changing from a diet based on animals and highly processed foods to whole plant foods, you can suppress the growth of harmful bacteria and stimulate those that are beneficial. Major alterations in the microflora take place within one to two weeks of changing a person’s diet.” (Rogers 6030).
