Glutton-Free: Cultivating a Theology of Enough
Part 19: Food Fight
In 2009 the Center for Disease Control ranked Pastor Steve Willits’ area of West Virginia the fattest in the nation. He had personally seen too many marriages and lives cut short because of obesity so he decided to do something about it.
“I know Jesus sheds a tear as our gluttonous food habits kill our own children while starving others who have nothing at all. Sometimes it makes me sad. Sometimes it makes me angry. But it always makes me want to fight.” (Willis, Loc 3283).
He began emphasizing healthy eating and exercise and since then his church has lost more than a literal ton of weight! You can read more of Pastor Steve’s encouraging story in his book Winning the Food Fight.
Pastor Steve admitted it pained him to write the following: “If we want to head back to a world where everyone gets food, where children don’t go to bed hungry, and where greenhouse gases aren’t overwhelming our planet, we have to eat less meat.” (Willis Loc. 2654, emphasis his).
I admire his further conviction, “As a follower of Christ, I cannot perpetuate our current food system by eating some kind of meat with every meal. I don’t even need it once a day.” (Willis Loc 2660).
