Glutton-Free: Cultivating a Theology of Enough

Part 17: Anticancer

My own interest in healthy eating began several years ago when my brother, a medical student at the time, gave me a book he had recently read. The introduction begins with these words: “Cancer lies dormant in all of us.” But as we know, not everyone will develop cancer.

In Anticancer, Dr. David Servan-Schreiber goes on to explain that what we feed our bodies can literally grow or shrink our cancer cells. Specifically, sugar and white flour are “cancer fertilizers” that feed cancer so it multiplies.

Cancers are constantly trying to take root and grow in our bodies. Our immune system is usually able to keep them under control. But certain factors can encourage cancer to grow out of control, causing disease. One of those factors is high sugar intake. Much research has proven that cancer cells feed on sugar.  (Rogers 2697).

This discovery led me to drastically reduce my intake of sugar and white flour and continue research about healthy eating.
