16. You Are What You Eat

Glutton-Free: Cultivating a Theology of Enough

Part 16: You Are What You Eat

At least three times a day we have the opportunity to glorify God with what we eat. In The Daniel Plan, Pastor Rick Warren reminds us:

You don’t get healthy by accident. It’s intentional. It’s a choice. Actually, it’s a lifetime of choices, but it begins with a decision. As a pastor I have met many people who were praying for God to heal illnesses and sicknesses that could easily be reversed if they simply made healthier choices. Why should God heal you of an obesity-related illness if you have no intention of changing the choices that led to it?”

As Christians we cannot afford to sit on the sidelines. Instead of following our culture into whatever dieting fad is currently popular we need to be leading the way in modeling a healthy lifestyle.

In his NYT Bestseller In Defense of Food, Michael Pollan warns:

Four of the top ten causes of death today are chronic diseases with well-established links to diet: coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and cancer… and they remain rare in places where people don’t eat the way we do.”

The fact that chronic diseases are rare where people eat differently should give us hope! If we change what we eat, we can also change the tragic outcomes.
