6. The Destruction of Sodom

Glutton-Free: Cultivating a Theology of Enough

Part 6: The Destruction of Sodom

Many Christians believe Sodom was destroyed by fire because of homosexuality. Yet God’s own commentary in Ezekiel 16:49-50 tells a different story:

Sodom’s sins were pride, gluttony, and laziness, while the poor and needy suffered outside her door. She was proud and committed detestable sins, so I wiped her out, as you have seen.”

Both homosexuality and gluttony grieve the heart of God and both led to the city’s destruction.

Affluent Christians remember Sodom’s sexual misconduct and forget its sinful unconcern for the poor. (Sider Loc 1448)

Ezekiel’s account of Sodom’s destruction is not a lone example of God’s anger over neglect of the poor. In fact, “More biblical texts warn of God’s punishment of those who neglect or oppress the poor than tell us that material abundance results from obedience.  (Sider. Loc 2321).
