Glutton-Free: Cultivating a Theology of Enough
Part 3: Double Deceit
The definition of gluttony could be broadened to be a lack of self-control over our sinful desires. It's any overindulgence at someone else’s expense. Not only do we damage our own health with our overindulgence but we also ignore the poor who need access to our resources. This double deceit of gluttony should be of special concern to believers.
“Expand your horizons a little and think about the 5 million children worldwide who died in 2010 because they didn’t have enough food. It amazes me that some of God’s children in the United States are going to die prematurely due to OVEReating, while around the world children are dying due to UNDEReating. What a cruel, inhumane joke by the forces of greed and gluttony!” (Willis Loc 2976, emphasis his).
The early church father St. Caesarius of Arles said, “Selfishness, which frivolously wastes resources that could be used for the poor, is appropriately called sinful.”
When cast in this light, we become gluttons, all.
