15. The Lord Our Delight

Glutton-Free: Cultivating a Theology of Enough

Part 15: The Lord Our Delight

I love the way the English Standard Version translates Isaiah 58:10-11:

If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday. And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places.

God’s perspective reveals that a true fast unto him is obedience to his commands. Thus Isaiah 58 concludes with a final command about keeping the Sabbath.

The kind of fast God requires is when we obey his commands. On the Sabbath we are not to pursue our “own interests.” Yet in the very next breath God speaks of enjoying the Sabbath. How can we enjoy a day when we do not pursue our own interests? Through the freedom of self-denial our greatest interest will be met, because “the Lord will be your delight.” I think this is the meaning of God’s promise to reward those who diligently seek him (Heb 11:6); the reward is God himself!
