Glutton-Free: Cultivating a Theology of Enough
Part 10: No Regrets
The Chicago Declaration of Evangelical Social Concern of 1973 challenges us:
“Before God and a billion hungry neighbors, we must rethink our values regarding our present standard of living and promote more just acquisition and distribution of the world’s resources.” (Sider. Loc 3934).
We rethink our values through prayer. Part of our prayer needs to be asking God how he wants us to be involved and then being willing to make sacrifices. What would it look like if believers chose to lower their standard of living so they could give more time and resources to holistic ministries of global evangelization and poverty alleviation?
I love the testimony David Platt shared about a wealthy member of his congregation who sold his large house and gave away many possessions:
“I wonder at some points if I’m being irresponsible or unwise. But then I realize there is never going to come a day when I stand before God and he looks at me and says, ‘I wish you would have kept more for yourself.’ I’m confident that God will take care of me.” (Platt. Pg. 1585).
