Photo by Pixabay I think I’m so passionate about teaching French to young kids because it works! Let me share our story. I wasn’t sure how teaching our kids 3 languages would go since we wanted them to learn English, French (the language of wider communication here in West Africa) and the local language. But our eldest, Jubilee, easily picked up the local language from her African nanny and friends so I decided to focus on French at home (French also has a more global audience and more resources available). The early years were the hardest because I didn’t want to give up speaking English, my heart language. Instead I tried to speak some French and play lots of French music. Once Jubilee turned 3 we allowed her limited screen time, with the caveat that it be in French (not just cartoons in French that she would not yet understand but actual language learning programs like Little Pim or Whistlefritz ). We also did simple French read-alouds ( T’Choupi is our favorite!)...

For this season I’ve identified 4 priorities: my personal walk with God, help with our West African Bible Translation, teach French to my girls, and cooking . Reading Redeeming Your Time helped me order my days around how to best make those priorities happen, rather than just hoping there would be times when the girls entertain themselves so I could do them. I finally had a good schedule when Eden went from 2 naps to 1 . So after some trial and error (I’m sure you moms of littles can relate!) we’ve landed on a new rhythm that works for our bilingual days: 6-6:45 I still wake naturally at 6 although the girls are still asleep. Usually I just lie in bed and enjoy having nothing to do yet though in realizing I could make better use of this time I’ve started keeping my glasses and kindle near bed so I can just grab them and relaxingly read. 6:45-9 By now both girls are up. Happy Birthday T'Choupi!

Have you met T'Choupi? This penguin-like boy, a famous French character, is a great friend for toddler & preschool French language learning ! T'Choupi's name is a diminutive of " cute " and his birthday is February 6. My favorite T'Choupi is their book series called " Une Histoire à 2 Voix " or " A Story With 2 Voices " because it is designed for a parent and child to read together.
